Tzu Chi Events Around the World
Canada
For 14 years, the Tzu Chi Toronto liaison office has been providing financial assistance for students studying social work at the University of Toronto, York University, and Ryerson University, all in the province of Ontario in eastern Canada. Over the years, more than a hundred students from low-income families have benefited from the scholarships.
This year, the scholarship presentation ceremony was held on October 28 in Tzu Chi Hall, which was donated by Tzu Chi to the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto.
Emcee Liu Fang-ling (劉芳鈴) introduced the representatives from the three universities. Cheryl Regehr, dean of the Faculty of Social Work, then spoke and commended Tzu Chi Toronto for its long tradition of supporting social work students.
Volunteer Huang Yue-yun (黃月雲) explained to the audience that Tzu Chi follow the teachings of Master Cheng Yen, who has always encouraged them to pay back to society the best they could. Foundation members are delighted to give financial help to social work students and to give love to local communities.
Each university received a grant of 10,000 Canadian dollars (US$8,070). The three universities will choose their own recipients and award the scholarships early next year. Tzu Chi representatives will be invited to attend the award ceremonies.
